Abstract

George Herron was one of the most colorful characters in the history of Grinnell College. He was chair of Applied Christianity from 1893 to 1899 and was a key figure in the social gospel movement. His relationship with Carrie Rand caused a scandal, particularly after he left his wife and children for her. Herron moved to Italy where he worked for Woodrow Wilson's peace program.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection includes writings of Herron from the 1890s, correspondence from and to college officials regarding Herron and his work at the college, published articles and unpublished papers about Herron, and extensive set of clippings regarding Herron, his philosophy and teaching, and his relationship with Carrie Rand.

Collection Historical Note

George Davis Herron (1862-1925) was a Congregational Church minister and professor of Applied Christianity at Grinnell College from 1893-1899 where he attracted nationwide attention for his radical statements. After his resignation in 1899 and his scandalous divorce, he joined the Socialist Party and married Carrie Rand. They moved to Italy where he worked for peace as an emissary of President Woodrow Wilson.
