Abstract

Henry Conard was a professor of Botany at Grinnell College from 1906-1944.  He gained international recognition as a botanist and bryologist and was an early environmental activist.  His papers contain notes on native Iowa flora and are important for anyone interested in prairie reconstruction.  The Conard Environmental Research Area (CERA) is named in his honor.

Scope and Contents of the Materials

The collection contains some of Conard's correspondence and newspaper clippings of articles about him.  There are also typed manuscripts of some of his articles, as well as several journals to which he contributed articles.

Collection Historical Note

Dr. Conard (1874-1971) received the B.S. and M.A. degrees from Haverford College and received a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Pennsylvania in 1901.  He was member of the Department of Biology at Grinnell College from 1906 to 1944.  He was a botanist, a bryologist, and an authority on bryophytes (especially the mosses) and waterlilies.

Correspondence between Dr. Conard and Professor Martin L. Grant, State Teachers College, Cedar Falls (now University of Northern Iowa) were donated by the Department of Biology, University of Northern Iowa, Oct. 1990.  ca. 7 letters, 1957-61.

Retirement: Letters to Professor Conard at the time of his retirement, spring 1944.

37 letters, most to Dr. Conard, 1904-54.  Transferred from Archives at University of Iowa, found there in an unrelated collection of papers from their Botany Dept. 10-94
